Causes Of Pain On The Top Of The Foot

Foot pain, top of foot pain particularly, is one of the most agonizing pains your body can feel. Not only does it interfere with your everyday tasks but it also paralyzes you from actually doing anything. There are several causes of foot pain. Top of foot pain in particular has a few contributing causes aside from the heel pain and the mid-foot pain.

Traumatic events and diseases are the most common causes of top of foot pain. Traumatic events here are the outcomes of outside forces which impact the body and which put the body in a position where it can be damaged. These traumatic events lead to injuries such as fractures of the bones, sprains, bruises and muscle strains. On the other hand, the diseases here pertain to Athlete’s Foot, osteoarthritis, diabetes, gout and the like. These diseases can contribute pain to your feet.

For further information, here is a list of traumatic events and diseases which cause foot pain, top of foot pain to be specific.

1. Tendonitis. This is a muscle injury in the tendons of the feet. Tendonitis normally occurs due to a traumatic event. It can induce redness and swelling on the top of the foot.

2. Stress Fracture. This is another top of foot pain which occurs due to a traumatic event or repetitive traumatic events. Stress Fracture can develop due to direct blow on your feet such as when someone steps on it. This brings you bruises and fractures on your bones. Swelling and redness, aside from pain, are also present when you have Stress Fracture.

3. Nerve Entrapment. This gives pain on the top of foot when the sensory nerves of your feet are usually entrapped due to your tight shoes. The sensory nerves which are responsible for giving your feet sensation or feeling are crushed to the bones of your feet. Nerve entrapment can cause your feet pain and numbness especially on the top.

4. Osteoarthritis. This type of arthritis is caused by the overuse of your joints and muscles, not only in your feet, but also in other parts of your body. This disease can also be called the degenerative joint disease. This means that your joints are losing its flexibility as you age. Repeated overstressing of your joints causes osteoarthritis which then causes you foot pain.

5. Athlete’s Foot. Fungal infection also causes foot pain. Athlete’s Foot, in general, only induces itching to the skin; however, severe cases of Athlete’s Foot can give you pain in the affected area which is commonly in your feet.

6. Diabetes. This disease typically develops several complications which include pain on your feet. Diabetes, if not handled properly, can cause you not only foot pain but also the amputation of your legs and feet.

7. Gout. This is a swelling of the joint usually in the big toe of your foot. Gout is developed through the excess uric acid in our body which crystallizes into urate and causes inflammation of the joints which then gives severe pain in the foot.
